Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with a metallic, steel-gray to black appearance and a reddish-brown streak. It often occurs in massive form or as smooth rounded nodules. Its high iron content makes it a major ore of iron. Hematite is heavy and dense, often used in radiation shielding and pigment production.
